In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston marathon. After realizing that a woman was running, race organizer Jock Semple went after Switzer shouting, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” However, Switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and Kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29. Bog bodies, which are also known as bog people, are the naturally preserved human corpses found in the sphagnum bogs in Northern Europe. Unlike most ancient human remains, bog bodies have retained their skin and internal organs due to the unusual conditions of the surrounding area.
These conditions include highly acidic water, low temperature, and a lack of oxygen, combining to preserve but severelytan their skin. Despite the fact that their skin is preserved, their bones are generally not, as the acid in the peat dissolves the calcium phosphate of bone.
The German scientist Dr. Alfred Dieckcatalogued the existence of over 1,850 northern European bog bodies in 1965, but many cannot be verified by documents or archaeological finds. Most, although not all, of these bodies have been dated to the Iron Age.
Many show signs of having been killed and deposited in a similar manner, indicating some sort of ritualelement, which many archaeologists believe show that these were the victims of human sacrifice in Iron Age Germanic paganism; though Cornelius Tacitus specifically describes bogging as a form of (sacralized) capital punishment in his 1st century work Germania. Some of the most notable examples of bog bodies include Tollund Man and Grauballe Man from Denmark and Lindow Man from England.

Robert the Doll
Robert “Gene” Otto was given a straw-filled doll by the family’s housekeeper in the early 1900’s. Gene grew highly attached to the doll, even naming it Robert after himself. Shortly after, the Otto family reported hearing their young son talk to himself in two different voices while alone in his bedroom. He would wake up in the middle of the night, screaming. The family would find him hiding in his bed surrounded by overturned furniture. Gene said that Robert the Doll messed up his furniture while glaring at him from the foot of his bed.
The family found mutilated toys other bizarre incidents occurring in the home more often. Each time, Gene said that it was all of the doll’s doing. They could occasionally hear the doll giggling throughout the house. Neighbors even claimed to see a doll waving through a window as they passed by the Otto home.
Robert the Doll was locked away in the attic of the Otto Mansion in Key West once Gene inherited the home himself. After marrying his wife, it was reported that she died from “insanity” caused by the doll. Others say that Gene died with Robert by his side.
The Otto Mansion is now a fully operating bed and breakfast where visitors can stay in Robert the Doll’s old room. The doll himself resides at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West where he is locked behind a glass case. Visitors claim that Robert’s newest source of mischief if placing curses on anyone who fails to ask permission before taking a photo of him. The wall behind Robert’s class case is filled with letters of previous visitors begging for forgiveness and for Robert to lift any curses placed on their families.

Post-mortem lividity or livor mortis is the reddish-blue discoloration of the body that occurs in the dependent parts of the body, due to the gradual gravitational flow of unclotted blood. This discoloration does not occur in areas where pressure against the skin occludes capillaries(seen above), as that prevents these tiny blood vessels under the skin from filling with blood, thus preventing post-mortem lividity.
Finger lime varieties. Finger limes are a micro-citrus originally discovered growing wild in Australia. The interior pulp can best be described as citrus pearls, or citrus caviar. The citrus pearls can be squeezed out of the finger lime and used in any place that you would use a lemon or lime. The flavor is similar to that of a lemon-lime-grapefruit combo, the juice bursts from the citrus pearls when bitten into.

Posters for the “雙妹” (Two Girls) line of Hong Kong cosmetics brand, 廣生行 (Kwong Sang Hong Ltd.) from the 1930s. Kwong Sang Hong was the first registered cosmetic company, founded in 1898 by a young scientist, Fung Fook Tien to provide fine cosmetics for the average woman. The origin of the “Two Girls” name is said to have been sparked by a stroll through a park when Fung encountered two beautiful women in sparkling white dresses. When he asked them if he was witnessing a visit by angels, they replied, “We’re simply two girls.”

Postmortem pink teeth phenomenon results from an inhibition of haemoglobin and haemoglobin breakdown products into the dentinal tubules. Post-mortem pink teeth must not be considered a reliable odontological parameter for determining the cause of death, however, the results of other studies have shown that the pink teeth phenomenon is a common finding related to cases of asphyxia such as strangulation, drowning or suffocation.
